European Summer School 2012

Science, ethics and law : norm dynamics and competition

Gréoux-les-Bains 27 − 31 August 2012

Registration deadline: July 31, 2012
Information: Christelle Tallon :, tel. 01 55 55 87 6

The community’s appropriation of science and technology is an essential condition for the exercise of democracy and the development of our societies. Although education and public debate, which were addressed during the previous European Summer Schools, are central to this requirement, science’s relationships with ethics and law are another major dimension of it. Science today, because its applications concern most aspects of human action, and because its organisation and dynamic can no longer be dissociated from those of the Cité, naturally encounters the norms that govern human behaviour, be it those of morality or law. This is reflected by a number of controversies and debates. How do science, ethics and law interact ? How are the dynamics at the frontiers of science, ethics and law currently developing ? What do their competitions and frictions reveal ? The Summer School will therefore pose the fundamental question of normativity in science and law and how they interact, and will explore the specific place of ethics and ethical norms.

Objectives and pedagogy

In the spirit of previous Summer Academies, the aim is not just to restate a complex reality, but rather to devise the tools needed to tackle the issue differently. The aim is also to learn what contribution research can make in addressing these numerous questions. Top-level speakers from diverse fields of expertise, along with an international perspective and ample time for debate among participants will enrich our understanding of the issues. The pedagogical approach of the European Summer Academy is founded on the experience gained during the annual national conference cycles of the IHEST and the first Summer Academies. Fostering interaction among the speakers, attendees and participants is a key objective of the pedagogical approach to help participants develop a shared analysis and a collective understanding.
